E.Coli O157:H7 and Its Health Impact

E. coli O157:H7 is a gram negative bacterium that can be found in feces, water, raw meat, and sometimes on contaminated vegetables. Once the bacteria is ingested,  you may experience symptoms from stomach cramp, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, nausea to headache. Everyone in contact with this type of bacteria may have their health at risk, but the elderly, immunocompromised and children are more likely to develop an illness. The more severe health impacts associated to this bacterium can cause kidney failure and even death.

  1. Was there no disinfection system in place to eliminate pathogens?

    1. Apparently there was but unfortunately the operators in Walkerton had minimum of training and they didn't realize the importance of the disinfection untill someone died.
