I like those bottles you can buy that have a built in brita filter in them! - Any info on those? If I had to choose I'd pick Tap water over bottled if those were my only two options.
I'll generally go with tap water because I know Vancouver's water is good. But if it's an old building, I worry about the pipes and will opt for bottled instead.
Tap water is optimal in the Lower Mainland. Bottled water is $1.50 more then free for water not even from this region. The added issue is the amount of plastic wasted.
Outside the lower mainland the choice is more limited and therefore more people understandably sway toward bottle water for that extra reassurance.
Some Japanese people I've met have commented that Vancouver has "delicious" tasting water! And in China, the people I met said they don't drink tap water, only bottled because it's not common to drink tap water there.
For me, I usually drink MetroVan tap water, but when away from home it's usually bottled.
I prefer bottled for my camping trips!

For MOST places in Canada no! However, I wouldn't take my chances when traveling....
